Etymology
From English AIDS. Many names were proposed by ZA Terminoloģijas komisija, including, VIDS - virāla imūndeficīta sindroms, sarglaupe, imūnkaile, imūnkailums, imunokaile, imunokailums, AIS - antimūnsindroms, antimūns, bezimunitāte, bezimunitātes slimība, bezimūnkaite, imizorgs - "imunitātes izzudums organismā," imūndeficīts, imunitātes grāvējs, imunitātes zude, imūnkaite, imunozude, imūntrūce, imūnzude, mērlis, nonimuna, sargzude, limfšūngande or shorter gande. Eventually AIDS, a declinable form aidss and mērlis (as an "emotionally captivating" alternative) were officially approved for use by Terminoloģijas komisija. Only the acronym is currently in use. In Latvian AIDS is first attested in print in October 1986.[1]

- AIDS ir saīsināts jaunās slimības nosaukums (no angļu «Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrom» [sic] - iegūtā imūndeficīta sindroms). Pirmo reizi ar šo slimību sastapās ASV ārstu grupa Kalifornijas štatā 1981. gada jūnijā.[2]
- AIDS is a shortened name for the new disease (from English "Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome"). A group of US doctors in the State of California were the first to encounter this disease in June, 1981.
