From Old English Æþelbeorht, from Proto-Germanic *Aþalaberhtaz, a compound of *aþalaz (“noble”) + *berhtaz (“bright, famous”). It became popular in 19th-century England due to Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
