English
Etymology
Borrowed from Spanish Belize (atttested since 1677) as the name of the Belize River, probably from Mayan beliz (“muddy water”).[1] (An earlier suggestion, that it could be a Spanish pronunciation of the surname of Scottish buccaneer Peter Wallace, is now considered to be a myth.)[1]
