Andamanese

English

Etymology

Andaman + -ese

Noun

Andamanese (plural Andamanese)

  1. A native or inhabitant of the Andaman Islands.

Usage notes

As with other nationalities formed with -ese, the countable singular noun in reference to a person (as in "I am an Andamanese", "writing about Andamanese cuisine as an Andamanese") is uncommon and often taken as incorrect. In its place, the adjective is used, by itself (as in "I am Andamanese") or with a word like person, man, or woman ("writing about Andamanese cuisine as an Andamanese person").

  1. A minor language family spoken on the Andaman Islands.

  2. Of or relating to the Andamanese language family.
