Etymology
Uncertain. Two very different origins have been proposed:
- From Basque aritz ona (“good oak”), from aritz (“oak”) + ona (“good”).
- From O'odham alĭ ṣonak (“small spring”), from alĭ (“small”) ṣonak (“spring”).
The claim that it comes from Spanish árida (“dry”) and zona (“zone”) is folk etymology.
