New Latin, of unknown origin. Possibly ultimately from Arabic ارنبيه (arnabiyah) (the name of a plant). Other origins suggested include Latin arna (“lamb”) or from Latin ptarmica (“sneezewort”) from Ancient Greek πταρμική (ptarmikḗ, “sneezewort”), from πτάρνυμαι (ptárnumai, “to sneeze”).
