From Old High German ackus, from Proto-Germanic *akwisī, probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʷs-ih₂- (“axe”), from *h₂eḱ- (“sharp, pointed”). Compare Low German Ax, Dutch aaks, English axe, Danish økse, Swedish yxa, Icelandic öxi.
