From Middle English *erthling, from Old English yrþling, ierþling, eorþling (“husbandman, farmer, ploughman”, literally “one of the earth”), equivalent to earth + -ling and/or Earth + -ling. Cognate with Dutch aardling (“Earthling”), German Erdling (“Earthing”).
