From Proto-Germanic *Agilaz. Old Norse forms include Old Swedish Æghil and Old Danish Eghil. The Old High German cognates are Agilo, Egilo.[1] Gothic 𐌰𐌲𐌹𐌻- (agil-) may also be cognate.
