First described in 1873 by Felipe Poey y Aloy as the type species of the then-new monotypic genus Grammicolepis (< Ancient Greek γραμμικός (grammikós, “grammatical”) + λεπίς (lepís, “scale”)). Epithet from Latin brāchium (“limb”) + -culus (diminutive suffix).
