From Middle High German hantschuoch, from Old High German hantscuoh, from Proto-Germanic [Term?]. Analysable as Hand (“hand”) + Schuh (“shoe”). Older contractions see in Middle Low German hantsche, Luxembourgish Händsch. Further cognates include Middle Dutch hantsco (modern Dutch handschoen), Old Saxon handskōh, Old English Handscōh (attested as a name).
