Etymology

From Swedish vernacular Helsinge, from which also Swedish Helsingfors.

Traditionally considered to have been named after the Swedish province of Hälsingland due to the high number of initial immigrants from there, in turn possibly from hals ("neck, throat", but here likely referring to a narrow water stream) + -inge, a suffix seen in Swedish place names.

Some more recent theories instead argue that the name is derived directly from the aforementioned hals, perhaps from Old Swedish hals > Old Swedish hälsinge, referring to the rapids, which are the narrowest part of the river (Vantaa).
