From Old High German huof, from Proto-Germanic *hōfaz, cognate with Dutch and West Frisian hoef, English hoof, Danish and Swedish hov, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱoph₂ós. Non-Germanic cognates include Russian копыто (kopýto) and Sanskrit शफ (śapháḥ).
