From Old Saxon krūd, from Proto-Germanic *krūdą (“plant, vegetable, herb”). Cognate with Old High German krūt (whence German Kraut), Old Frisian krūd (whence Saterland Frisian Kruud), Old Dutch krūt (whence Dutch kruid), Yiddish קרויט (kroyt).
