- An edible fish, a grunt (Haemulon album), of the west Atlantic.
Usage notes
A misreading of an early reference caused this name to be wrongly applied to Haemulon aurolineatum, the tomtate, in a few dictionaries and other reference works, but this apparently never made it into actual usage.
