Borrowed from Old Norse Mjǫllnir, from Proto-Germanic *meldunjaz, from Proto-Indo-European *meldʰ-n- (“lightning”) (compare Old Norse mjuln (“fire”), Welsh mellt, Slovene mółnja).

Spelling variations include use of either one L or two, use of either I or E as the second vowel, and use of any of the following as the first vowel: O, Ö, Ø.
