Etymology
Via other European languages, ultimately from the name of a temple in that area, dedicated to Ἡρακλῆς (Hēraklês) Μόνοικος (Mónoikos) “Herakles (Hercules) Monoikos” (it is said that Hercules passed through Monaco at some point), from Ancient Greek μόνος (mónos, “single, alone”) and οἶκος (oîkos, “house”); the name was later extended to the 6th-century-BC colony of Phocaeans, where the temple was located.
