Etymology

From pama (“man, person”) (in several northeast Australian Aboriginal languages) + nyungaa (“man, person”) (in several southwestern Australian Aboriginal languages) +‎ -an. Apparently coined by American linguist Kenneth L. Hale (1934-2001).
