Etymology

With irregular shortening of the stem vowel from Middle High German rüezel, from Old High German *ruozil, from Proto-Germanic *wrōtilaz (snout), from Proto-Germanic *wrōtaną, whence also Old High German ruozan (to grub, root), Dutch wroeten (to grub) and English root (to dig out).
