Initialism. When applied to a "rocket-propelled grenade" it derives from Russian РПГ (RPG), initialism of ручной противотанковый гранатомёт (ručnoj protivotankovyj granatomjót, hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher), of which "rocket-propelled grenade" is a backronym.
