Gothic
Etymology
Uncertain; often cited as deriving from Proto-Germanic *TΔ«waz (βGermanic god of warβ), from Proto-Indo-European *deywΓ³s (βgodβ).
The reconstruction of this term is based entirely on the name of the Gothic letter π (t), which is glossed as tyz (in Latin script) in the Carolingian-era Codex Vindobonensis 795, folio 20. The reconstructed form given here is based on a supposed etymological relationship between this isolated form tyz and Germanic *TΔ«waz. From this supposed relationship, too, is derived the definition given here, which is little more than an educated guess commonly repeated in the scholarly literature.
