Etymology

Unknown; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *pl̥b-ró-s, from *pleb- (to babble) + *-rós[2], or perhaps onomatopoeic[1], compare Ancient Greek βᾰ́ρβᾰρος (bárbaros). Possible cognate with Latin plōrō (to cry out).
