From Proto-Indo-European *bʰrews- (“to break”). Related to Latin frustum (“bit, scrap”), Proto-Germanic *brausijaną (compare Old English brȳsan, brīesan (“to crush”)), Old Church Slavonic бръснути (brŭsnuti, “to rake”), Proto-Albanian *brauša (compare Albanian breshër (“hail”)).
