Proto-Finnic

Alternative forms

Etymology

Cognate with Proto-Samic *jāvrē, Erzya эрьке (erʹke), East Mari ер (jer), from Proto-Finno-Permic *jäwrä (a loanword from Indo-European). An alternate form *jarvi (Viitso reconstructs *jarva for Livonian at least) is reflected in Livonian and Votic, which may be more original, reflecting the common development *ä-ä > *a-i (compare e.g. *talvi).
