Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Unclear. Two etymologies have been suggested:

  • From *joodak (to drink) + *-stak, then perhaps suggesting that the verb's original meaning was "to flow".
  • Cognate to Hungarian ívik (to spawn), from Proto-Uralic *jokse-, with irregular vowel length.
