Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Unclear. Two etymologies have been suggested:
- From *joodak (“to drink”) + *-stak, then perhaps suggesting that the verb's original meaning was "to flow".
- Cognate to Hungarian ívik (“to spawn”), from Proto-Uralic *jokse-, with irregular vowel length.
