Etymology

Most probably a borrowing thru Proto-Norse, from Proto-Germanic *kwerkō. The word has been also compared with Mordvinic counterparts (Erzya кирьга (kirʹga), Moksha корга (korga)), which are however more likely derive from Proto-Slavic *kъrkъ.
