Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Two comparisons have been proposed:
- Cognate to a Permic *wanša, compare Komi-Zyrian важ (važ) and Udmurt вуж (vuž), from Proto-Uralic *vanša.
- Borrowed from Proto-Germanic *wanhaz or *wanhą (“crooked, bent, bad”).
