From Proto-Indo-European *h₂lek- (“to defend”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλέξω (aléxō, “defend”), Old Armenian երաշխիք (erašxikʿ, “guarantee, pledge”), Sanskrit रक्षति (rákṣati, “guard, watch, take care”).
