Borrowed from Gaulish ambaxtos, from Proto-Celtic *ambaxtos (“servant”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂mbʰih₂eǵtos, from *h₂mbʰih₂eǵ- (literally “drive around”), from *h₂m̥bʰi (“around”) + *h₂eǵ- (“to drive”).
