From Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)- (“to suckle, nurse”). Cognate with Latin fellō (“suck”), Old Church Slavonic доити (doiti, “to suckle”), Sanskrit धयति (dháyati, “he sucks, drinks”).
