From Pre-Germanic *grobʰidos, from Proto-Indo-European *gr̥bʰ-, zero-grade form of *gerbʰ- (“to carve, scratch”) + *-itaz, *-utaz (animal suffix)[1] (compare *hurznutō (“hornet”), *herutaz (“deer”), *ganutô (“gander”)).
