From Pre-Germanic *grobʰidos, from Proto-Indo-European *gr̥bʰ-, zero-grade form of *gerbʰ- (to carve, scratch) + *-itaz, *-utaz (animal suffix)[1] (compare *hurznutō (hornet), *herutaz (deer), *ganutô (gander)).
