From Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- (“to fall into thought, remember, care for”). Cognate with *maimrōną (“to think, ponder, muse, think out”), Latin memor (“mindful, thoughtful”), Sanskrit स्मरति (smárati, “he remembers, recollects”).
