From Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- (“to fall into thought, remember, care for”). Cognate with *mīmrōną (“to think, keep in mind, be mindful, muse”), Latin memor (“mindful, thoughtful”), Sanskrit स्मरति (smárati, “he remembers, recollects”).
