From Proto-Germanic *maimrōną (“to worry, be mindful”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- (“to resort to thinking, remember, take care”). Akin to Old English mamor "lethargy, sleep", Old English mimor "mindful", Old English mimorian "to remember". See mimor.
