From Proto-Indo-European *brodnó- (“to wander about”). Probably related to Polish bredzić (“to rave, talk, jabber”), Russian бредить (breditʹ, “to rave, wander, be delirious”), Latvian bradāt (“to talk nonsense”), and probably to Middle English praten. More at prate, prattle.
