Possibly a substantivised form of *ǵr̥h₂-nós (“matured, grown old”) (compare Sanskrit जीर्ण (jīrṇá, “old, worn out”)), itself a verbal adjective derived from *ǵerh₂- (“to grow old, to mature”).
