Proto-Mon-Khmer

Etymology

  • Proto-Mon-Khmer: *klaʔ (Shorto, 2006, #197)

It's unclear how Khmer ខាល (khaal) and the Proto-Vietic word relate to this root. They may represent the relics of a pre-metathesis proto-form *khaal, or may result from apocope of *kalaa (cf. Proto-Katuic).

Noun

Panthera tigris corbetti, the Indochinese tiger.

*klaʔ

  1. tiger
