From Proto-Vietic *kʰaːlʔ; uncertain connection with Proto-Mon-Khmer *klaʔ (whence Khmer ខ្លា (khlaa), Bahnar kla, Khasi khla, Mon ကၠ). Compare also Khmer ខាល (khaal, “Year of the Tiger”).
