Etymology
Possibly calque of Iranian (cp. Old Median Bagadāta- (“god-given, given by god”)) or calque of Ancient Greek Θεόδοτος (Theódotos) or Ancient Greek Θεόδωρος (Theódōros, “Theodore; literally 'gift of God'”). Morphologically from *bogъ (“god”) + *danъ (“given”), the passive participle of *dati (“to give”).
