From Proto-Balto-Slavic *skaistei, from Proto-Indo-European *skéyd-sti, from *skeyd- (“to split, divide”).
Baltic cognates include Lithuanian skíesti (“to separate, dilute”), Lithuanian šķiêst (“scatter, spill, cut”).
Indo-European cognates include Proto-Germanic *skītaną (“to defecate, to shit”), Latin scindō, Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō, “I split, cleave”), Welsh cwys, Sanskrit छिनत्ति (chinátti).
