Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *der(ˀ)-, from Proto-Indo-European *der(H)-. Cognate with Lithuanian dérti (“to tear, to peel”) (Žemaitian dialect), 1sg. derù, as well as Ancient Greek δέρω (dérō, “to flay”), English tear.
