Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dalptan. Morphologically an instrument noun from *dьlti (“to hollow, chisel”) + *-to or from *dьlbiti (“to hollow, chisel”).
Cognate with Old Prussian dalptan (“punch, instrument for punching holes”) and Old English delfan (“to dig”).
