Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dalptan. Morphologically an instrument noun from *dьlti (to hollow, chisel) + *-to or from *dьlbiti (to hollow, chisel).

Cognate with Old Prussian dalptan (punch, instrument for punching holes) and Old English delfan (to dig).
