From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gurˀdla, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷr̥h₃-dʰlom. Morphologically as if *žer- (to eat) + *-dlo.

Baltic cognates are Lithuanian gurklỹs (crop), gùrklis (crop) and Old Prussian gurcle.
