Etymology
By intensive reduplication from the onomatopoetic root *gol-, whence also *gȏlsъ (“voice”). Compare similar onomatopoetic formation in Sanskrit गर्गर (gargara, “a type of musical instrument”) and Proto-Slavic *kǫkoljь.
