Proto-Slavic
Etymology
By the consensus view, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *kuningaz. A minority position instead takes the word as native Proto-Slavic *kun-ingo- (“protruding, prominent”) (*kъnъ + *-ędzь) and borrowed into Proto-Germanic.
