From Proto-Indo-European *mḗms. Compare Latvian miesa, Lithuanian mėsà, Old Prussian mensa, Albanian mish, Armenian միս (mis), Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌼𐌶 (mimz), Sanskrit मांस (māṃsa), मांसम् (māṃsam), मांस् (māṃs).
