Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *muktei (to slip away, to flee, escape), from Proto-Indo-European *mu-n-ék-ti ~ *mu-n-k-éti, from *(s)mewk-. Compare Latvian mukt (knock off, slip), Lithuanian mùkti, munkù, mukaũ (be released, escape).
