Related to *màzati (to oil, to anoint, to smear). Generally reconstructed as *màz-slo, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mōˀź-sla.

  • Derksen: Probably cognate with Lithuanian mė́šlas (manure), Latvian mȩ̂sls (manure). Sometimes instead derived from earlier Proto-Slavic *màz-tlo.
  • See *màzati.
