Proto-Slavic

Etymology

The verb is virtually everywhere extended with *u-, which demonstrates that the attested meaning is secondary. The literate meaning is unknown. Vasmer mentions a possible relation with Lithuanian pū́ti (to rot), Latvian pūt (to smell), which ultimately descend from proto-Indo-European *pewH- (to purify), but he qualifies it as questionable.
