Probably from Proto-Indo-European *ser-, *serp-, or *sr̥p-.
Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *serp-, Hittite 𒊬𒉺 (šarpa-, “farming tool”), Sanskrit सृणि (sṛṇi), Ancient Greek ἅρπη (hárpē) (hence English harpoon), Latin sarpō.
